General Contracting services in a variety of settings since 1946

The H. C. Olsen Construction Company has performed general contracting services in a variety of settings since 1946.

While its mainstay has always been telecommunications work for the major telecom providers, Olsen Construction has continued to grow over the years and has expanded its base to include major higher education and commercial clients in Southern California.

Olsen Construction presently specializes in projects involving: 1) new construction; 2) alterations to existing buildings, building systems, and interior spaces; and 3) major hardscape/landscape improvements. Olsen has also been involved from the earliest days with wireless telecommunications, and has a group solely dedicated to the installation and upgrading of cellular antennas and sites.

Olsen Construction is proud to be a union contractor (signatory with the Laborers and Carpenters unions) and a Public Utilities-Certified Hispanic-American/Woman-Owned and Operated Business.

Olsen Construction is licensed in California, Nevada, and Arizona.

Approach

The H. C. Olsen Construction Company understands that in today’s highly competitive marketplace, it is not enough to simply reduce costs or accelerate the rate at which the work is performed – it is necessary to accomplish both to succeed. Olsen also understands that it can play a significant role in helping its clients streamline their project activities to keep them at the top of their markets.

Streamlining project activities can be accomplished in several ways, but the underlying
key is involvement – early, ongoing, and significant involvement. In addition, there are several things Olsen does on an ongoing basis within its own company to generate time and cost savings that can be passed on to its clients. Among them are the following:

Olsen performs background checks and drug testing on all new hires, maintains a stable base of qualified employees, provides them with direction, trains them on an ongoing basis, and encourages them to contribute to quality improvements and customer satisfaction. The result is work that is performed more efficiently, safer, and with less liability.
Olsen instills in its employees its overall approach – especially that of “working behind the scenes” in its client’s facilities. The result is that Olsen “works around” its clients – its clients do not “work around” Olsen. This approach, when coupled with its extensive experience, allows Olsen to be proactive, responsive, and flexible enough to meet the changing needs of its clients
Olsen uses pre-qualified subcontractors
Olsen makes good use of the available technology to speed up the “information side” of a project, including communication and processing paperwork. The field is connected to the office with telephones, pagers, lap top computers, and an employee web site.
Olsen uses its web site (hcolsen.com) to make available the contract documents for projects it is bidding. Olsen also uses FTP sites with specific clients to provide a “one stop” location for project contract documents from design through construction to closeout.

Why Choose Us

Depth of Experience

The H. C. Olsen Construction Company has an extensive and very knowledgeable staff of field and office employees. All of its Managers and about half of its project superintendents have over twenty years of work experience. This experience is shared with workers on a regular basis at both tailgate safety meetings held at job sites and at formal field employee and superintendent meetings held at the company training facility. In addition to ongoing training on OSHA and client topics (including the extensive AT&T national “Network Awareness Training”), most field employee meetings include a “lessons learned” segment where a specific project is reviewed and the important lessons to be learned are stressed to all workers.

Responsiveness

Olsen’s responsiveness is perhaps best shown in its commitment to providing emergency responses to its clients.
Olsen has always maintained twenty-four-hour emergency response capabilities. The office’s voice messaging system provides callers with the appropriate guidelines to enable them to contact any one of several Olsen employees who are always on call. Olsen’s project managers, superintendents, and almost all its field personnel have company-issued cellular phones. Olsen’s 70+ field workers live throughout the Southern California area. Olsen has established twenty-four-hour access to equipment/tool rental yards and cooperative agreements with electrical, mechanical, and plumbing contractors. In times of need, Olsen can respond at a moment’s notice. Olsen has assisted its clients during major disasters like earthquakes and building fires; but it has also performed such relatively minor but necessary activities like repairing broken windows, securing buildings after attempted break-ins, and opening nonfunctioning electronic gates to allow employees access to buildings.

Commitment to Diversity in the Workplace

The H. Commitment to Quality and Safety

Olsen is deeply committed to its quality and safety programs. Its full-time quality manager and full-time safety manager 1) assess current performance via client satisfaction surveys and project safety inspections, 2) train at regular intervals to improve worker skill levels and to address any opportunities for improvement that have been identified, 3) evaluate results over time to ensure continuous improvement, and 4) benchmark client satisfaction survey results with general contractors performing similar work nationwide to ensure superior performance.
